"Battle of the Bag"

The story that stood out to me the most during this video was regarding the Mumbai, India floods and how it essentially led to so much more disaster due to their sewage system getting clogged by plastic bags. It was quite insane seeing how something such as single use plastic bag could impact a whole environment to the point where it inadvertently led to deaths due to the lack of ability to properly drain the sewage system. This was quite eye opening to the fact that something as “small” as a single use plastic bag has such huge ramifications, especially in countries where people don’t have quite as many resources as we do here.

The efforts made by the government in India was definitely a step in the right direction. Though in a way it felt a little extreme due to the fact that India isn’t that wealthy of a country, in retrospect the fear of large fines can definitely make a greater impact so that people can control their usage of plastic bags. Though many may find their tactics to stop this issue a bit extreme. It’s once again a step in the right direction to not only force people to learn about the negative impacts this could have, but to also prevent further disaster from happening that could essentially impact their country once again.

After watching this video I believe that the United States should definitely implement something on a national scale so that we could be more mindful on just how harmful single use plastic bags are.  An article I read recently spoke about how in New Jersey they have implemented a single use plastic bag ban May of this year. Even though there are some flaws with the ban, it is still making a huge difference on a scale that many don’t even realize just yet. In the end though single use plastic bags are very convenient, they can also wreak havoc on the environment.
