Reflecting on the Environmental Geography of my Product

Image
Though avocados have become a fundamental fruit in our daily diets. The production of this fruit does wreak havoc on the environment. Consumption of avocados has been a phenomenon on many different scales. We consume this fruit almost religiously, without necessarily thinking about the negative impacts it has on our future and, most importantly, our livelihood. As you learn more about avocados, you Learn that the largest producer of this fruit is Mexico. Avocado Production is such a huge deal in Mexico that they gave it the nickname “green gold.” Though “green gold.” has been instrumental financially for Mexico, it does come at a price. Due to such a high demand to produce this fruit a lot of forest lands with diverse wildlife in Mexico have been destroyed. Aside from that, a lot of land was also intentionally burned due to Mexican laws allowing producers to change land use permits to commercial agriculture ...

Environmental impacts of my meal

Image
For my most recent meal I had a Caesar salad with avocado. For this blog post I wanted to mainly focus on the environmental impacts of avocado since it is something I consume quite regularly. Prior to this post, I was aware that avocados have pretty amazing health benefits. After reading an article, I learned a few more things about just how beneficial avocados are to the human body. As the text mentions, avocados can improve digestion, lower bad cholesterol, and even decrease the risk of depression while also being extremely beneficial for your eyesight. So far these seem to be very great benefits to a largely consumed Item. Another fact that I learned is that avocados are grown in the US, though a large  majority of them are grown abroad in countries such as Mexico and Peru.    Though the benefits of avocados are amazing, it seems as though they are slowly creating problems agriculture wise. Due to being in high demand, avocados have essentially become a monocult...

Hulamatou's meal this week

Image
Due to being a bit under the weather this week my meal choices were quite simple. This week I had a Caesar salad without meat as well as a side of  tomato soup. My salad consisted of romaine lettuce, croutons and parmesan cheese with a side of caesar dressing. I decided to keep it simple simply because I wasn’t that hungry plus these options seem like the best, especially with how I was feeling. Since I used romaine lettuce for my salad, I found that they’re a great source of potassium which is greatly beneficial in maintaining cardiovascular health. For my tomato soup, I used tomatoes that a friend of mine grew herself. The fact that I used freshly grown tomatoes not only made it taste good, but it was also good for the environment, due to being unprocessed and freshly made. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319725

"Battle of the Bag"

Image
The story that stood out to me the most during this video was regarding the Mumbai, India floods and how it essentially led to so much more disaster due to their sewage system getting clogged by plastic bags. It was quite insane seeing how something such as single use plastic bag could impact a whole environment to the point where it inadvertently led to deaths due to the lack of ability to properly drain the sewage system. This was quite eye opening to the fact that something as “small” as a single use plastic bag has such huge ramifications, especially in countries where people don’t have quite as many resources as we do here.       The efforts made by the government in India was definitely a step in the right direction. Though in a way it felt a little extreme due to the fact that India isn’t that wealthy of a country, in retrospect the fear of large fines can definitely make a greater impact so that people can control their usage of pla...
