Reflecting on the Environmental Geography of my Product

Though avocados have become a fundamental fruit in our daily diets. The production of this fruit does wreak havoc on the environment. Consumption of avocados has been a phenomenon on many different scales. We consume this fruit almost religiously, without necessarily thinking about the negative impacts it has on our future and, most importantly, our livelihood. As you learn more about avocados, you Learn that the largest producer of this fruit is Mexico. Avocado Production is such a huge deal in Mexico that they gave it the nickname “green gold.” Though “green gold.” has been instrumental financially for Mexico, it does come at a price. Due to such a high demand to produce this fruit a lot of forest lands with diverse wildlife in Mexico have been destroyed. Aside from that, a lot of land was also intentionally burned due to Mexican laws allowing producers to change land use permits to commercial agriculture instead of forest land as long as it was lost to burning (weforum.org). What this can teach us is essentially that by any means necessary, these producers will do what it takes in order to be able to produce avocados, even if it creates further detriment to the environment. It seems everything is more about financial gain rather than the greater good of the environment.
Even though things are getting more complicated regarding the production of avocado, there are still ways in which we can create shifts wether on a global, local or individual level. As the article suggests, in order to reduce these harmful impacts, we could implement better laws or even create certain certifications that signify sustainable farming and fair trade for avocados that are sold in supermarkets(weforum.org). In doing this we can ensure that avocado production isn’t due to other shady practices such as exploitation of aquifers or deforestation. Finally, on an individual level, we can reduce how much avocados we consume. Maybe we could buy less quantities when we are grocery shopping, or overall just find other alternatives so that we aren’t over consuming this fruit to the point where the production goes wild in the way that it already is. Though these things can’t happen overnight, by taking small steps we will be able to overturn the potential harmful impacts avocado production.
